Catarina de Albuquerque

CEO of Sanitation and Water for All

The Portuguese Government congratulates the appointment of Catarina de Albuquerque to the position of CEO of Sanitation and Water for All (SWA), the global partnership of States, international organizations, civil society and the private sector, under the auspices of UNICEF, whose mission is to work towards universal access to safe drinking water and adequate sanitation.

Catarina de Albuquerque was the first United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Human Right to safe drinking water and sanitation. Since 2015, she was Executive Director of SWA and is now set to become the first female CEO of this global partnership.

The Portuguese Government reaffirms its commitment to the 2030 Agenda and congratulates the new CEO, wishing her great success in her role.

This nomination reinforces the roster of Portuguese nationals in United Nations institutions, a source of pride for our country and an illustration of Portugal’s strong commitment to multilateralism; it comes also at a time and on the year when the international community is giving special attention to Sustainable Development Goal number 6 (Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all), within the framework of the United Nations 2030 Agenda.
